On January 30, 2014, the team of Sound & Sea Technology (Lynnwood, WA and Ventura, CA) and Fred Olsen Wave (Oslo, Norway) was awarded a contract by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Engineering & Expeditionary Warfare Center (NEXWC) in Port Hueneme, CA for test and demonstration of the Fred Olsen Lifesaver (Figure 1) Wave Energy Converter at the Navy’s Wave Energy Test Site (WETS) (Figure 2), at Kaneohe, Oahu, Hawaii. The Lifesaver utilizes a very innovative Power Takeoff technology that shows considerable promise for special-purpose applications of wave energy. The contract is for two years, and includes fabrication of a Lifesaver test unit, installation at WETS and extended in-water testing of the device.
